We adapt our method based on our growth. For example, in the early days, we rapidly created prototypes and proof of concepts, and launched those very quickly. As the company grew and demand from the market grew, it created a lot of chaos. Then we introduced more process to control that chaos with the ability to continue trialing new concepts. \",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"As for innovation, in the early days, we spent little money towards protecting IP. As we grew, IP protection became more important. We’re always looking for new information to help inform those decisions. And managing demand, it involves a lot of prioritization between teams and growth in hiring. Something creative, something that is difficult to do. It’s not trivial. One of the reasons I love using our stuff is that it’s very innovative and the technology is very interesting and challenging. And it’s difficult to do all of the tooling built for mapping. We have some proprietary technology that we created and have now protected, so I definitely feel like we encourage innovation. We have specific teams that work on prototyping and research projects, so that’s definitely a part of what we do day-to-day and what goes into our innovative approach. \",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[{\"type\":\"bold\"}],\"value\":\"Are there any specific technologies our Development teams use or work on that really set us apart?\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"Not necessarily specific technologies, but it’s more the way we use certain things and how we put them together that sets us apart. Some of them are algorithm-based, some of them are process-based. Above all, our mapping process is much more efficient than anybody else. And more secure. At the end of the day, it’s more about how the people we hire use the resources and their creativity applied to that rather than a specific aspect of the tech stack. \",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[{\"type\":\"bold\"}],\"value\":\"So what could a developer expect coming to work at Mappedin? They differ, but they also have a common thread, which is the system that we're trying to build. Understanding how everything fits together, the overall architecture, and how the maps actually get created and consumed. That's the Mappedin 101 for Dev. That's the basic stuff.\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"And I think at the end of the day, with the size that we are at, the amount of products that we have, and the different pieces, and the back end that has to be supported; everybody plays a critical role. The developers that thrive are the ones who understand the mission and have a sense of ownership for how they are contributing to that mission. We have an ecosystem. We’re known in the industry. We want to get to a point where we’re as synonymous with indoor maps as Google is for outdoor maps. In our opinion, there is no drawback to frank and transparent conversations. Not only does this immediately build trust between interviewers and candidates, but it also provides a clear picture of the role and what the day-to-day actually looks like. This can also lead to really honest and collaborative discussions. Applicants can self-select whether the role is the right fit for them and when it is, they are empowered to prepare for these challenges and consider potential solutions before they even step foot in the office.\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"Don't make decisions for candidates\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"heading-3\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"During the interview process, it’s easy to feel like you have a good snapshot of who someone is. After all, you’ve spent the last hour or two discussing their work history and style, their thought process, strengths, weaknesses, and more. One of our guiding interview principles and as all good interviewers know, is never decide for yourself what a candidate will or will not be comfortable with. Let me give you a few examples.\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"“Lisa mentioned that she has a hard time meeting new people and this role requires her to get up-and-running really quickly. She’ll be too shy and won’t be able to start work as soon as we need.”\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"“Simon was extremely nervous during his first interview. This role requires talking to lots of people, internally and externally. His nerves will get the best of him and he will fail in this role.”\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"This is an example of one of the many interview biases. Even if your intuition may be correct, this creates a gap and doesn’t provide candidates with a fair chance. Rather than telling yourself stories, propose these as questions throughout the interview. In Lisa’s case, ask her for examples of times she overcame this, what she’s doing to work on it, and what her concerns are with ramping up quickly at the company. Allow the candidate the chance to reflect and see how they would handle a given situation. \",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"Have the right people in the room\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"heading-3\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"The Mappedin Team is made up of six departments: Customer Operations, Development, Finance, People Operations, Product & Marketing, and Sales. Despite the differences between them, the interview process remains the same and are made up of discussions and technical assessments. For the sake of applicants and the team, we make sure that the right people are in the room. This means that throughout the process, the candidate has a chance to speak with someone from People Operations, members of their prospective team, the hiring manager, and Mappedin’s Founder, Hongwei Liu. This allows both the candidate and the hiring team to get a feel for one another, examine different perspectives, and discuss things like culture, working style, processes, and more.\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"Don't waste time\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"heading-3\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"We believe in a quick interview process, aiming for two weeks from initial phone interview to a formal offer. There is nothing worse for candidates or hiring managers, than losing momentum during this time. Companies should want to keep strong candidates engaged with both the team and the open position. To accomplish this, you can move them through the stages quickly and when that’s not possible, give them honest and timely updates. It is also important to keep in mind that the time managers and team members spend interviewing is time spent away from their day-to-day tasks and projects.\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"If you’ve come into contact with recruiting or interviewing in the past, you may have heard the saying “hire slow, fire fast.” The foundation of this concept is to ensure someone is a good fit before bringing them onboard your team and, if things aren’t working out, let them go promptly and start fresh. When I first joined Mappedin, the Development team was really small, consisting of maybe around 10 people, and I was our first Developer Evangelist. Prior to that, the role was spread out between the rest of the Dev team. As an individual contributor, I was able to jump in and make a big contribution by building our Web SDK; which is now a core part of our product. Mappedin was having a lot of success and started getting a lot bigger, and eventually the Dev team split up into two teams: the Consumer team and the Enterprise team. Mappedin’s CTO, Ed Wei, asked if I wanted to be a Dev Manager and take over the Consumer team, and I said yes. That went really well, and the team continued to grow and separate into several other teams; all of which I had managed at one point or another. Then at the start of the year, I was promoted to the Director of Engineering, which is where I am today. In every municipality, first responders struggle to maintain pre-incident floor plans for a significant portion of the city, leading to poor situational awareness in emergency response situations. When firefighters get a call, they often don’t know what is going on inside a building, and the floor plans they receive are outdated or in weird formats. Mappedin’s proposed solution will automate the conversion of existing scanned floor plans, which every first responder organization or city permit office has, into simplified, standardized maps. On top of that, we’re creating a situational awareness dashboard for tablets that enables first responders to tag certain areas on the map with icons. This can include the location of the fire, exits and entrances, fire extinguishers, and all other important information. The first stage is conducted by our People Operations team who reviews your application to see if you’re lined up with what we’re looking for. If you are, you’ll have a simple phone screening which consists of some basic questions to see if you’re aligned with the role and this is something you’re interested in. Then you move onto a short technical phone screen either with me or one of the leads that report to me. This will be a simple technical question we go through with you, it’s not meant to be a trick question or anything, it just goes over some of the things you’d be doing everyday as a developer.\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"If you’re successful there, there are two interviews that can happen after that, depending on the role. The interview isn’t a test where you have to answer the question completely on your own, you can certainly ask questions and clarify. You don’t have to have every function memorized or anything like that, we can tell you. After all, half of being a developer is knowing the right questions to type in Google! Lastly, remember that you’re interviewing us at the same time that we’re interviewing you.
