That means helping them solve business and technical problems, and ensuring they have what they need to grow, be happy, and successful. This sometimes involves getting my hands dirty to build or fix something that would otherwise fall through the cracks. I also do a lot of hiring, and have a number of security related responsibilities as part of our SOC 2 policy.\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[{\"type\":\"bold\"}],\"value\":\"You’ve been at Mappedin for almost 6 years now, congratulations! When I first joined Mappedin, the Development team was really small, consisting of maybe around 10 people, and I was our first Developer Evangelist. Prior to that, the role was spread out between the rest of the Dev team. As an individual contributor, I was able to jump in and make a big contribution by building our Web SDK; which is now a core part of our product. Mappedin was having a lot of success and started getting a lot bigger, and eventually the Dev team split up into two teams: the Consumer team and the Enterprise team. Mappedin’s CTO, Ed Wei, asked if I wanted to be a Dev Manager and take over the Consumer team, and I said yes. That went really well, and the team continued to grow and separate into several other teams; all of which I had managed at one point or another. Then at the start of the year, I was promoted to the Director of Engineering, which is where I am today. I enjoy managing people and teams, helping people solve problems, and ultimately helping people be successful. The company is well connected and something that has always impressed me about Mappedin is our company values. It’s the kind of attitude where people help each other out, always try to get better, are willing to go the extra mile when needed to get something done, and feel empowered to make things better for their team, company, and our customers. In every municipality, first responders struggle to maintain pre-incident floor plans for a significant portion of the city, leading to poor situational awareness in emergency response situations. When firefighters get a call, they often don’t know what is going on inside a building, and the floor plans they receive are outdated or in weird formats. Mappedin’s proposed solution will automate the conversion of existing scanned floor plans, which every first responder organization or city permit office has, into simplified, standardized maps. On top of that, we’re creating a situational awareness dashboard for tablets that enables first responders to tag certain areas on the map with icons. This can include the location of the fire, exits and entrances, fire extinguishers, and all other important information. This solution ensures that emergency services always have the most up-to-date information on hand. \",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[{\"type\":\"bold\"}],\"value\":\"Mappedin hosts 3-day hackathons once every quarter, could you tell us more about that? It used to happen one day every month; however, we decided to change the format to a three-day-long event that occurs every couple of months. The idea has always been to give developers the opportunity to work on something they’re interested in, outside the scope of their regular sprint work. This could be experimenting with new technologies, or features that you think would be awesome if they existed, or trying something you’ve always wanted to do. I’d say that a developer should come to Mappedin because we’re a really great company to work for. We have a really positive culture, and everyone is friendly and fun to work with. We try really hard to support our developers and give them opportunities for professional growth, in terms of taking on bigger and harder challenges, as well as growing into roles they’re interested in. A question I often ask people that report to me is “what do you want to be able to do in a year that you can’t do now?”. People might say they want to get better at back end development, try some DevOps, or maybe get some leadership experience, and we want to help them reach that goal and be successful. Overall, Mappedin is a great place for developers to learn and grow, and have fun while doing that. \",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[{\"type\":\"bold\"}],\"value\":\"What is the hiring process like for a software developer?\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"For a software developer, there are a couple of stages and we try to move through these stages very quickly. The first stage is conducted by our People Operations team who reviews your application to see if you’re lined up with what we’re looking for. If you are, you’ll have a simple phone screening which consists of some basic questions to see if you’re aligned with the role and this is something you’re interested in. Then you move onto a short technical phone screen either with me or one of the leads that report to me. This will be a simple technical question we go through with you, it’s not meant to be a trick question or anything, it just goes over some of the things you’d be doing everyday as a developer.\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"If you’re successful there, there are two interviews that can happen after that, depending on the role. There’s one where you’ll meet with the hiring manager and myself to go through your previous roles and employment history. Then the other one is a more in-depth technical interview where you’ll meet with two members of the team you’d be working on, and will be asked more role specific questions. If you’re successful with those steps and everything prior, the next step would be to meet with Ed, our CTO, and Hongwei, our CEO. \",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[{\"type\":\"bold\"}],\"value\":\"Do you have any interview tips for a developer who wants to apply to Mappedin?\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"Yes. I’d say brush up a bit on the technologies we are going to be talking about in the interview. It will depend on the role, but you can absolutely ask, we don’t want to trick you! There may be some React, Javascript, or some back end stuff. Another tip would be to ask questions. The interview isn’t a test where you have to answer the question completely on your own, you can certainly ask questions and clarify. You don’t have to have every function memorized or anything like that, we can tell you. After all, half of being a developer is knowing the right questions to type in Google! Lastly, remember that you’re interviewing us at the same time that we’re interviewing you. He had done a couple of years of physics at a university in Turkey and has always been big into tech. I thought it was really interesting and wanted to continue down that path so I took physics in university, but enjoyed writing code more. I didn’t go into development thinking it was a “man’s industry” and I can’t do it. I think we can help make our industry more inclusive by doing more community outreach, coding sessions, or bootcamps for example. The purpose is to be a comfortable and safe space for minorities in this field to learn and try different things. With Mappedin hosting events like these, it would demonstrate that we’re trying to be part of the solution by encouraging people who may have otherwise been too intimidated to get started, and help them along their journey. These kind of events can target any age group. I think it would be awesome if one day, someone wants to interview at Mappedin because we hosted a coding series they went to in high school which helped them learn they love to code and that they can do it!\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[{\"type\":\"bold\"}],\"value\":\"What would you say that you enjoy the most about being a developer?\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"What I found with software development in general is that it can be painful, but that's also what makes it very rewarding. A lot of the time, you’re working on stuff that maybe you haven’t done before and it’s good to have that learning experience. Even though you might be hitting your head on the desk sometimes, by the end of the sprint you usually end up figuring things out and have a feeling that you accomplished something that you didn’t know how to do two weeks prior. When I first started updating Mappedin Web, I hadn't worked with TypeScript or MobX. I was looking at this code and thinking “some of it makes sense and some of it really doesn’t,” because it wasn't what I was used to. It was pretty intimidating but I noticed that by the end of the sprint, I had a very different feeling since I was able to learn and get the work done. There is definitely a lot of self-learning required in the role.\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[{\"type\":\"bold\"}],\"value\":\"It's great that you enjoy challenging yourself in that way. At that time, you had a front-end position open, I knew someone at the company that enjoyed working here, and I learned that Mappedin uses a lot of modern technologies I was really interested in. I also got a good vibe from the interview and interviewers. Right off the bat, it seemed like somewhere that I would fit in!\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[{\"type\":\"bold\"}],\"value\":\"We love to hear that! We release stuff pretty quickly, so what you're working on isn’t sitting for months in a release cycle before heading into production which is nice. Our team culture is really good and you're not just sitting at your desk staring at code everyday. After we moved to working remotely, we started playing team games on a weekly basis. Recently, we've been playing \",\"nodeType\":\"text\"},{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[{\"type\":\"italic\"}],\"value\":\"Among Us\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"},{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"  in our games channel and my team has a call every morning for about 15 minutes where we just catch up with each other.\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[{\"type\":\"bold\"}],\"value\":\"Have those touch points with your team and other people in the company made the transition to working from home a bit more smooth? \",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"Definitely! At first it was weird not seeing my teammates, but I like that it gives me more time and there are always good lunch options at home in the fridge! It has been a bit easier to concentrate at home since you have less distractions but you have to remember to take breaks as well, otherwise you will just burnout staring at the screen. We've been using Discord for our morning stand up or games and I know that other teams have been using it for the whole day. It’s great because people can drop-in to chat and we get some organic conversations running, similar to what we used to have in the office. \",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[{\"type\":\"bold\"}],\"value\":\"You’ve been at Mappedin for about 1.5 years now. The people are awesome and there are a lot of different things that we work on. I started working initially on the CMS / Map Editor and by now I've worked on our SDKs, Mappedin Web, and some other features. I’ve definitely gotten exposure to a lot of different things which has been really great. \",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[{\"type\":\"bold\"}],\"value\":\"Is there an accomplishment that you're most proud of in your role?\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"I was working on automated borders in the CMS last December, as the mappers had been manually creating infill around stores and amenities which takes a lot of time. What I was working on was an automated way to generate those borders without them having to do that; it was kind of a math problem to solve. It was my responsibility to complete and it was something that I could see from start to end. It was a really interesting problem to solve and it saved the map designing team a lot of time.\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[{\"type\":\"italic\"}],\"value\":\"Interested in working with us?
