AutoCAD helps us clean up the files that we receive from our clients and ensure that there is accurate scaling as well. We also use Adobe Illustrator to clean our data and make sure it's perfect before we move into Mappedin's Map Editor and CMS. Another thing that the mapping team is in charge of is exporting those maps into different compatible formats. One of those formats is IMDF which is a vector data file created by Apple so we also use a custom exporter that we built to export those files and filter certain data.\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[{\"type\":\"bold\"}],\"value\":\"You have a very interesting background. Usually in the architectural world, things tend to be very traditional and involve a lot of regulations and processes that are very repetitive. Everyone in the team has a background in design, which makes it very interesting. We all share certain hobbies and interests. Our team always looks for people with a certain attention to detail and someone that can identify colour palettes or can come up with a very creative approach to a specific kind of map.\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"Because Mappedin serves a range of different venues at Mappedin - whether a stadium, office, or retail venue - of course all of them have different needs. That means that the Map Designer has to make sure that the client's venue information is represented well and has the best presentation. In that sense, I definitely think that a background in design is helpful. Also, because of my background, the ability to interpret CAD files, floor plans, and blueprints comes naturally to me, but this is a skill that can be developed over time. The tools that we use and certain technological aspects of the job make it very easy for us to work independently but continue to collaborate as a team. It has definitely been challenging with respect to social interaction and that's one thing I miss about being in the office, but we try to schedule different meetings to overcome that. Our team has a standup meeting every morning where we get to talk about our updates, maybe spend some time playing a game, or just chatting in general which allows us to connect on a daily basis as a team.\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[{\"type\":\"bold\"}],\"value\":\"Do you have any good advice for those working from home? \",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"Since our role is so focused on design, colours, and visual aspects, it's been so useful to have additional monitors at home. It definitely feels like a similar office setting and is great ergonomically. Also, make sure that you stand and move around a lot more. We tend to walk a lot in the office, whether moving between meeting rooms or walking to the kitchen to get a coffee, so just having regular breaks and walking a bit is important.\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[{\"type\":\"bold\"}],\"value\":\"Have you picked up any new projects or started any new hobbies since going remote?\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"Yes, I did! I've always loved painting, and occasionally try to pick up a few craft projects as well. Over the last few years, pottery has been a passion of mine and I've actually set up my own pottery studio at home. I get all my pottery pieces fired and glazed at another studio. Since we went remote, I was able to build a couple of gardening boxes in my backyard which was such a new and nice experience. This summer, I harvested more than 50 tomatoes and a big range of herbs and other vegetables like chillies, zucchini, eggplant, and fruits. Now we are looking to plant a winter crop as well with kale, broccoli, and potatoes. \",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[{\"type\":\"bold\"}],\"value\":\"That sounds wonderful! In my team, it is mainly working with other designers and architects and we are focused on creativity. But it is also interesting to see different interests among so many different people. For example, the developers at Mappedin love playing video games and I have been trying to understand the passion behind video game culture. He had done a couple of years of physics at a university in Turkey and has always been big into tech. I thought it was really interesting and wanted to continue down that path so I took physics in university, but enjoyed writing code more. I didn’t go into development thinking it was a “man’s industry” and I can’t do it. It was more so, I have this big motivation from someone with experience behind me and I want to do it and show other people that I can do it as well!\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[{\"type\":\"bold\"}],\"value\":\"Since Software Development is a very male-dominated industry, do you think there’s anything that companies can do to be an attractive workplace for others?\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"Definitely! I think we can help make our industry more inclusive by doing more community outreach, coding sessions, or bootcamps for example. The purpose is to be a comfortable and safe space for minorities in this field to learn and try different things. With Mappedin hosting events like these, it would demonstrate that we’re trying to be part of the solution by encouraging people who may have otherwise been too intimidated to get started, and help them along their journey. These kind of events can target any age group. I think it would be awesome if one day, someone wants to interview at Mappedin because we hosted a coding series they went to in high school which helped them learn they love to code and that they can do it!\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[{\"type\":\"bold\"}],\"value\":\"What would you say that you enjoy the most about being a developer?\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"What I found with software development in general is that it can be painful, but that's also what makes it very rewarding. A lot of the time, you’re working on stuff that maybe you haven’t done before and it’s good to have that learning experience. Even though you might be hitting your head on the desk sometimes, by the end of the sprint you usually end up figuring things out and have a feeling that you accomplished something that you didn’t know how to do two weeks prior. When I first started updating Mappedin Web, I hadn't worked with TypeScript or MobX. I was looking at this code and thinking “some of it makes sense and some of it really doesn’t,” because it wasn't what I was used to. It was pretty intimidating but I noticed that by the end of the sprint, I had a very different feeling since I was able to learn and get the work done. There is definitely a lot of self-learning required in the role.\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[{\"type\":\"bold\"}],\"value\":\"It's great that you enjoy challenging yourself in that way. At that time, you had a front-end position open, I knew someone at the company that enjoyed working here, and I learned that Mappedin uses a lot of modern technologies I was really interested in. I also got a good vibe from the interview and interviewers. Our team culture is really good and you're not just sitting at your desk staring at code everyday. After we moved to working remotely, we started playing team games on a weekly basis. At first it was weird not seeing my teammates, but I like that it gives me more time and there are always good lunch options at home in the fridge! It has been a bit easier to concentrate at home since you have less distractions but you have to remember to take breaks as well, otherwise you will just burnout staring at the screen. We've been using Discord for our morning stand up or games and I know that other teams have been using it for the whole day. The people are awesome and there are a lot of different things that we work on. I started working initially on the CMS / Map Editor and by now I've worked on our SDKs, Mappedin Web, and some other features. It was my responsibility to complete and it was something that I could see from start to end. As we grew, IP protection became more important. We’re always looking for new information to help inform those decisions. And managing demand, it involves a lot of prioritization between teams and growth in hiring. Something creative, something that is difficult to do. It’s not trivial. One of the reasons I love using our stuff is that it’s very innovative and the technology is very interesting and challenging. And it’s difficult to do all of the tooling built for mapping. We have some proprietary technology that we created and have now protected, so I definitely feel like we encourage innovation. Some of them are algorithm-based, some of them are process-based. Above all, our mapping process is much more efficient than anybody else. And more secure.
