My job is to help Mappedin customers use our SDKs by investigating technical solutions, exploring new use cases, and creating content to demonstrate features and troubleshooting issues. A large part of the role is building developer friendly demos and guides that help 3rd party developers get started with our SDKs, explore their capabilities, and build their own integrations. I worked in marketing and communications for 5 years, then went to school for computer science, and had previous experience at a mapping company. I wanted to move to Canada, so I was exploring different job opportunities there. I saw the Mappedin posting for a Developer Evangelist role and I had to apply. It had everything that I was looking for; it was a mapping company, located in Canada, and combined development with communications. Finland is 7 hours ahead of most of my colleagues which means I started working in the late afternoon and finished at night. I enjoyed this schedule because it was light outside when I had free time and gyms were empty during the day. \",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"My plan was always to move to Canada, so after a few months, I settled into Kitchener, which is quite close to the office. I’m glad that I have the opportunity to occasionally see my colleagues face-to-face as well, even though I like working remotely. I’ve never been a huge fan of commuting, and nothing beats the commute time to my home office. With Mappedin offering yearly home office stipends, my setup at home is also more comfortable than I have ever had in an office setting, which matters when spending so many hours at the desk.\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[{\"type\":\"bold\"}],\"value\":\"What do you like most about working at Mappedin or in your role specifically?\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"I already had experience in the mapping industry and that was one of the reasons I originally applied to Mappedin. However, working with maps again made me realize how much I enjoy them. The abstraction that they provide people to navigate their lives, not only on the city streets, but also visualizing indoor spaces. Now that life in the offices and other indoor spaces has changed over the past few years, I’m looking forward to innovations enabled by better indoor maps. What makes someone a good fit for a role like this?\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"It is a good fit for someone with a technical background and strong communication skills. On the technical side, you have to be interested in learning about our tech and solutions, as well as educating others on how it works and how to use it. This is where communication skills are important: you need to be able to talk about it. Working closely with customers, you have to understand their wants and needs, and come up with solutions. You also need to be able to talk about our products in a way that non-technical people can understand. \",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"Then there’s the content creation side of the job which is creating guides, demonstration applications, and ensuring \",\"nodeType\":\"text\"},{\"data\":{\"uri\":\"https://developer.mappedin.com/\"},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"documentation\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"hyperlink\"},{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\" is up-to-date. You’re not focused on one thing, rather you’re jumping between smaller and more frequent projects. If you’re creative and enjoy shifting priorities, this might be a good fit for you. \",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[{\"type\":\"bold\"}],\"value\":\"What are some of the advantages and disadvantages of having a position like this at Mappedin?\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"Advantages of this role include being able to help customers create amazing things with our SDKs and indoor maps, exploring new use cases, doing a lot of small experiments, as well as talking to people all over the world. On the flip side, talking to people all over the world means talking to them at weird hours. I have some calls at 8:00am and 7:00pm. We adapt our method based on our growth. For example, in the early days, we rapidly created prototypes and proof of concepts, and launched those very quickly. As the company grew and demand from the market grew, it created a lot of chaos. Then we introduced more process to control that chaos with the ability to continue trialing new concepts. \",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"As for innovation, in the early days, we spent little money towards protecting IP. As we grew, IP protection became more important. We now have a strategy that invests towards both protection and R&D.\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[{\"type\":\"bold\"}],\"value\":\"How do we determine what features or products we will work on next? And how do we manage the demand for those products?\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"We use a number of things - customer feedback, competitor analysis, market research. We’re always looking for new information to help inform those decisions. And managing demand, it involves a lot of prioritization between teams and growth in hiring. We’re always looking for great people to bring on to jump on these new directions and products. \",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[{\"type\":\"bold\"}],\"value\":\"You head up all of our Development teams. How would you define innovation at Mappedin?\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"I think innovation means creating technology that simply does not exist in the market yet. Something creative, something that is difficult to do. It’s not trivial. Something that at the end of the day, our customers will enjoy using. \",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[{\"type\":\"bold\"}],\"value\":\"Would you say we’ve set out to do that, or that it's a product of the processes we’ve set up so far?\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"To a certain degree it's a bit of both. One of the reasons I love using our stuff is that it’s very innovative and the technology is very interesting and challenging. And it’s difficult to do all of the tooling built for mapping. We have some proprietary technology that we created and have now protected, so I definitely feel like we encourage innovation. We have specific teams that work on prototyping and research projects, so that’s definitely a part of what we do day-to-day and what goes into our innovative approach. \",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[{\"type\":\"bold\"}],\"value\":\"Are there any specific technologies our Development teams use or work on that really set us apart?\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"Not necessarily specific technologies, but it’s more the way we use certain things and how we put them together that sets us apart. Some of them are algorithm-based, some of them are process-based. Above all, our mapping process is much more efficient than anybody else. And more secure. At the end of the day, it’s more about how the people we hire use the resources and their creativity applied to that rather than a specific aspect of the tech stack. \",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[{\"type\":\"bold\"}],\"value\":\"So what could a developer expect coming to work at Mappedin? They differ, but they also have a common thread, which is the system that we're trying to build. Understanding how everything fits together, the overall architecture, and how the maps actually get created and consumed. That's the Mappedin 101 for Dev. That's the basic stuff.\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"And I think at the end of the day, with the size that we are at, the amount of products that we have, and the different pieces, and the back end that has to be supported; everybody plays a critical role. The developers that thrive are the ones who understand the mission and have a sense of ownership for how they are contributing to that mission. They understand why they are important, and how their work fits into the bigger picture. \",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[{\"type\":\"bold\"}],\"value\":\"It’s 2025, and we are one of the best companies in the world to work for. We have an ecosystem. We’re known in the industry. We want to get to a point where we’re as synonymous with indoor maps as Google is for outdoor maps. When I first joined Mappedin, the Development team was really small, consisting of maybe around 10 people, and I was our first Developer Evangelist. Prior to that, the role was spread out between the rest of the Dev team. As an individual contributor, I was able to jump in and make a big contribution by building our Web SDK; which is now a core part of our product. Mappedin was having a lot of success and started getting a lot bigger, and eventually the Dev team split up into two teams: the Consumer team and the Enterprise team. Mappedin’s CTO, Ed Wei, asked if I wanted to be a Dev Manager and take over the Consumer team, and I said yes. That went really well, and the team continued to grow and separate into several other teams; all of which I had managed at one point or another. Then at the start of the year, I was promoted to the Director of Engineering, which is where I am today. In every municipality, first responders struggle to maintain pre-incident floor plans for a significant portion of the city, leading to poor situational awareness in emergency response situations. When firefighters get a call, they often don’t know what is going on inside a building, and the floor plans they receive are outdated or in weird formats. Mappedin’s proposed solution will automate the conversion of existing scanned floor plans, which every first responder organization or city permit office has, into simplified, standardized maps. On top of that, we’re creating a situational awareness dashboard for tablets that enables first responders to tag certain areas on the map with icons. This can include the location of the fire, exits and entrances, fire extinguishers, and all other important information. The first stage is conducted by our People Operations team who reviews your application to see if you’re lined up with what we’re looking for. If you are, you’ll have a simple phone screening which consists of some basic questions to see if you’re aligned with the role and this is something you’re interested in. Then you move onto a short technical phone screen either with me or one of the leads that report to me. However, once you have those baseline project management skills, you can apply them to any industry. Our teams are knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly across the board.
