I work on the front-facing applications, like Mappedin’s Digital Directory and Web products. I create the components and display for our front-end applications based on the designs we get from our designers. Both of my managers reiterated that in my 8-month position, the first four months would be spent working on the Directory kiosk redesign and the next four would be focused on Web redesign. I was lucky that I was able to work heavily on both major product reworks.\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"Specifically with the kiosk, I worked a lot with the store profile card state. That’s when you’re using a kiosk and you search for a location, it displays a card that shows all of the associated information and deals (e.g. hours, contact information). That state is one of the two more complicated states or screens in the kiosk and that was one of the things that I focused on. For a few weeks, I was just trying to wrap my head around all the different design tweaks that had to be implemented on that screen which were very unique. \",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[{\"type\":\"bold\"}],\"value\":\"For other co-op students wondering, can you speak to your experience at Mappedin and why you applied to a position with us? \",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"A couple of reasons; I thoroughly enjoy work especially because all the people that I work with, we have a lot of fun! We have game sessions and play a bunch of different games like League of Legends, skribbl.io, and Pictionary. Talking with the people on the team is really fun as well.\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"But even before I joined and before I knew the people, I still wanted to come to Mappedin. One of the primary reasons was because I was really interested in the position, especially because I enjoy the visual aspects of programming. I enjoy seeing the things that I make visually, being able to appreciate the aesthetics, and having other people appreciate the aesthetics as well. I found that everyone I talked to was super friendly and outgoing! If I need something or any help, I can always reach out to somebody and they'll try their best to help me. Even if they can’t, they will direct me to somebody who can. By a good margin, it is honestly the best team environment that I have worked in out of all of my co-ops. In my previous co-ops, I have been in situations where I have just been relegated to the corner and do simple co-op work and didn’t end up learning much. But at Mappedin, I feel like I am completely treated like another member of the team and I am given the same tasks as everybody else along with having the same expectations, which is really useful for me personally.\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[{\"type\":\"bold\"}],\"value\":\"Shortly after you joined, we moved to a remote working environment because of COVID-19. I can take a couple of minutes to get myself in the mindset as I have a lot more time in the morning not having to go through a big morning routine or commute to work. \",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[{\"type\":\"bold\"}],\"value\":\"What is the best WFH tip or advice that you can give?\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"My best WFH tip or advice would probably be to have a good segregation of work and personal spaces. I have a basement room downstairs, where I do most meetings. But I also have a room upstairs with a big window and turn it into like a big office where I do programming. Just walking upstairs, I’m getting ready to be in the work mentality, and when I am finished for the day, I turn everything off and go all the way downstairs and it brings my energy levels down and I am ready to relax.\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[{\"type\":\"bold\"}],\"value\":\"Since working remotely and having more time on your hands, have you started any new hobbies or projects?\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"There's been a couple of things. There was a while where I tried to learn 3D modelling and I was learning render by myself. It was very hard, a lot harder than I expected. I did one little project by myself, and I've kind of been jumping from thing to thing, trying to fill the time. There was a time when I really got back into drawing. When I was little, I used to do a lot of art and used to go to art classes and got into digital drawing too. I have a tablet and would draw in photoshop little sketches and stuff. At the moment, I am working on a web application for me and my friends to use while we play board games over video chat. It’s like a little application that we can use to count points or scores and coordinate things and synchronize across different browsers. \",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[{\"type\":\"bold\"}],\"value\":\"Is there anything else that you would like to share about your time at Mappedin?\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"I feel really lucky to come at the time that I did, partially for the reasons that I said earlier where I worked on both of the huge front-end projects, especially for Mappedin Web V2. I got to work on the foundations of it with our Software Architect in what was an incredibly productive learning experience from me. I was able to get my hands dirty with setting up the entire project from scratch alongside him and learning a lot from him. I came at a really opportunistic time and a lot of really interesting and really fun stuff started a little bit after I showed up.\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"I can sincerely say it has been my most enjoyable work experience, my favourite co-op experience that I have done, and is a really good way to end my series of co-ops and on a really high note!\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"}],\"nodeType\":\"blockquote\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"I'm confident that in the future that I will look back at this time specifically, where I learned a lot and also not feeling like I was forced to play catch up all the time. We're helping our clients to build experiences around indoor maps and making them easy to use for everyone, especially developers. \",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[{\"type\":\"bold\"}],\"value\":\"As part of that problem-solving, how have we developed our style for innovating new products and features?\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"Well, companies go through phases as they grow. We adapt our method based on our growth. For example, in the early days, we rapidly created prototypes and proof of concepts, and launched those very quickly. As the company grew and demand from the market grew, it created a lot of chaos. Then we introduced more process to control that chaos with the ability to continue trialing new concepts. \",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"As for innovation, in the early days, we spent little money towards protecting IP. As we grew, IP protection became more important. We now have a strategy that invests towards both protection and R&D.\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[{\"type\":\"bold\"}],\"value\":\"How do we determine what features or products we will work on next? And how do we manage the demand for those products?\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"We use a number of things - customer feedback, competitor analysis, market research. We’re always looking for new information to help inform those decisions. And managing demand, it involves a lot of prioritization between teams and growth in hiring. We’re always looking for great people to bring on to jump on these new directions and products. \",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[{\"type\":\"bold\"}],\"value\":\"You head up all of our Development teams. How would you define innovation at Mappedin?\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"I think innovation means creating technology that simply does not exist in the market yet. Something creative, something that is difficult to do. It’s not trivial. Something that at the end of the day, our customers will enjoy using. \",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[{\"type\":\"bold\"}],\"value\":\"Would you say we’ve set out to do that, or that it's a product of the processes we’ve set up so far?\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"To a certain degree it's a bit of both. One of the reasons I love using our stuff is that it’s very innovative and the technology is very interesting and challenging. And it’s difficult to do all of the tooling built for mapping. We have some proprietary technology that we created and have now protected, so I definitely feel like we encourage innovation. We have specific teams that work on prototyping and research projects, so that’s definitely a part of what we do day-to-day and what goes into our innovative approach. \",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[{\"type\":\"bold\"}],\"value\":\"Are there any specific technologies our Development teams use or work on that really set us apart?\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"Not necessarily specific technologies, but it’s more the way we use certain things and how we put them together that sets us apart. Some of them are algorithm-based, some of them are process-based. Above all, our mapping process is much more efficient than anybody else. And more secure. At the end of the day, it’s more about how the people we hire use the resources and their creativity applied to that rather than a specific aspect of the tech stack. \",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[{\"type\":\"bold\"}],\"value\":\"So what could a developer expect coming to work at Mappedin? They differ, but they also have a common thread, which is the system that we're trying to build. Understanding how everything fits together, the overall architecture, and how the maps actually get created and consumed. That's the Mappedin 101 for Dev. That's the basic stuff.\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"And I think at the end of the day, with the size that we are at, the amount of products that we have, and the different pieces, and the back end that has to be supported; everybody plays a critical role. The developers that thrive are the ones who understand the mission and have a sense of ownership for how they are contributing to that mission. They understand why they are important, and how their work fits into the bigger picture. \",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[{\"type\":\"bold\"}],\"value\":\"It’s 2025, and we are one of the best companies in the world to work for. What got us here?\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"We’ve built a developer platform, and we’ve made ourselves known.  End of 2025, we have clients using our Developer Platform to build solutions for any mapping use case. We have an ecosystem. We’re known in the industry. We want to get to a point where we’re as synonymous with indoor maps as Google is for outdoor maps. That’s what we’re aiming for. \",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"As far as culture, we have the four Mappedin values. Play for the Team, Learn Fast, Honesty & Accountability, and Customers First. This means that throughout the process, the candidate has a chance to speak with someone from People Operations, members of their prospective team, the hiring manager, and Mappedin’s Founder, Hongwei Liu. We’re creating new environments, running our applications in these environments, and raising tickets to improve our deployment process of these applications.
