There we were encouraged to build a project on the side — not a business, just something cool to show to our friends. A digital copy of every physical building, created and maintained using our web-based tools. Recently I’ve been interviewing for an experienced industry veteran to scale up a new initiative. Chances are that the last mall you went to, anywhere in the Anglosphere, is our customer. It’s often said that the first 10 people set the company culture. I think that’s true. But a great culture can also be undone by hiring. Whether you’re the most senior employee or most junior employee at Mappedin, you will know what’s happening across the company. This includes Sales, Marketing and Product, Engineering, and all other departments. At Mappedin, you have the opportunity to move within and across teams. For instance, you could be on the Mapping team and either you, or someone on the leadership team, could realize that you’re really technically inclined and would perform well on the Engineering team. It is expected that employees working hours will include the company’s core hours of 10am-4pm EST. Now, how you want to structure your schedule beyond those set hours is up to you. I know some employees start pretty early and end work early, while others start later and finish a bit later. It’s entirely dependent on how you’re able to get your allocated work done. A lot of skills are transferable, especially non-engineering roles. If your resume is too cluttered with information, it's difficult to read. Make sure your resume is clean, highlight the most important things you’ve done, as well as the experience and skills that are applicable to the role.\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[{\"type\":\"bold\"}],\"value\":\"Do you have any interview tips?  \",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"One of the most important interview tips I have is to be concise and precise when answering a question. If you can’t think of an answer immediately, ask the interviewer for a moment to collect your thoughts before responding. Sometimes when you’re on the spot, you’re not able to think of an answer right away, and that’s okay. We adapt our method based on our growth. For example, in the early days, we rapidly created prototypes and proof of concepts, and launched those very quickly. As the company grew and demand from the market grew, it created a lot of chaos. Then we introduced more process to control that chaos with the ability to continue trialing new concepts. \",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"As for innovation, in the early days, we spent little money towards protecting IP. As we grew, IP protection became more important. We’re always looking for new information to help inform those decisions. And managing demand, it involves a lot of prioritization between teams and growth in hiring. Something creative, something that is difficult to do. It’s not trivial. One of the reasons I love using our stuff is that it’s very innovative and the technology is very interesting and challenging. And it’s difficult to do all of the tooling built for mapping. We have some proprietary technology that we created and have now protected, so I definitely feel like we encourage innovation. We have specific teams that work on prototyping and research projects, so that’s definitely a part of what we do day-to-day and what goes into our innovative approach. \",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[{\"type\":\"bold\"}],\"value\":\"Are there any specific technologies our Development teams use or work on that really set us apart?\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"Not necessarily specific technologies, but it’s more the way we use certain things and how we put them together that sets us apart. Some of them are algorithm-based, some of them are process-based. Above all, our mapping process is much more efficient than anybody else. And more secure. At the end of the day, it’s more about how the people we hire use the resources and their creativity applied to that rather than a specific aspect of the tech stack. \",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[{\"type\":\"bold\"}],\"value\":\"So what could a developer expect coming to work at Mappedin? They differ, but they also have a common thread, which is the system that we're trying to build. Understanding how everything fits together, the overall architecture, and how the maps actually get created and consumed. That's the Mappedin 101 for Dev. That's the basic stuff.\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"And I think at the end of the day, with the size that we are at, the amount of products that we have, and the different pieces, and the back end that has to be supported; everybody plays a critical role. The developers that thrive are the ones who understand the mission and have a sense of ownership for how they are contributing to that mission. We have an ecosystem. We’re known in the industry. We want to get to a point where we’re as synonymous with indoor maps as Google is for outdoor maps.
