I came from an Events background primarily, and did Events for about 15 years. With the pandemic, events weren’t really available for quite some time, and it forced me to do a lot of self-reflection on what I wanted to do next career wise. After a lot of conversations with my network, I realized that what I enjoyed most about my career in Events was building relationships with people, and so I thought that transitioning into Customer Success would be a natural fit.\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"I actually reached out to Hongwei, the CEO of Mappedin, because I had been following Mappedin for a really long time. He mentioned that Mappedin was looking for a Customer Success Manager, and so I applied for the role and got to meet that awesome team. They took a chance on me, and not long after, another opportunity was presented to me to join the Sales team as an Account Executive (AE) for Inside Sales. Also, having conversations with Michael, the Director of Growth, about the role and what it was like was important to me. I felt very supported and confident in making the decision because everyone thought I could do it. I don’t have a sales background per se, but when your Director of Sales is telling you that you can do it, that instills confidence in you and your capabilities. \",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"Overall, the transition has been pretty smooth. I worked really closely with Ian to make sure that the customers I was working with as a CSM were handed off in a very meaningful and careful way. I didn’t want those customers to feel like they couldn’t talk to me ever again because I was moving over to the Sales team. It’s nice because I’m still able to interact with them and have those relationships with them, just as an AE now. Also, coming from the Customer Success team helped me from a Sales perspective because I was able to speak about our products and what they can do. As a CSM, you’re interacting and dealing with our product all the time, doing implementations and CMS training, so that’s made the transition a lot easier. \",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[{\"type\":\"bold\"}],\"value\":\"What do you like most about working in Sales? \",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"Honestly, I love getting the deal. I’m a competitive person and there’s nothing more exciting than carrying a deal across the finish line. The gratification isn’t instant, you have to be really patient at times, but then it’s even sweeter when you get the deal signed after months and months of work and follow up conversations with customers. You also have to be patient and persistent. You have all these meetings and these great conversations with potential customers, so being persistent and following up with them is really important. Probably 80% of the job is following up with people! I would also say that you need to be likeable. People don’t want to buy something from someone they dislike unless they really need the product or service you’re selling. \",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[{\"type\":\"bold\"}],\"value\":\"How do you handle rejection when a customer says they’re not interested?\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"I think the best way to handle that type of thing is to learn from it. Regardless of the career you’re in, I think it’s really important to reflect on any kind of mistake or rejection or challenging experience and take learnings from it. We’re always congratulating each other and we chat every morning about any challenges that we’re having or any exciting opportunities coming up. I struggled with it at first, but over time it’s been getting easier and becoming more “normal”. I like being able to connect with the team on Zoom, and we’ve been fortunate enough to have been able to do a couple things together in person, such as a Go Karting event in the summer. It’s also nice having the opportunity to work in the office and see people outside of Zoom. Even almost a year in, it’s so exciting being able to see people in person! \",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"Overall, what I like most about remote work is the flexibility. I felt like I didn’t have to sacrifice some of the things that I might have if we had to be in the office 24/7. I’m a mom and I have a young child, so being able to walk her to school and pick her up from school has been really great. They’ve done a really good job culture wise, and I’ve never encountered an ego at Mappedin. The tech industry is usually criticized for that, but it doesn’t exist here. I’m never afraid of asking a question, and I’m never met with “Briton, how do you not know that?” or “I can’t believe that you don’t know that yet!”. No one is ever like that. There’s no ego, everyone’s really willing to help, and everyone wants you to succeed. That means helping them solve business and technical problems, and ensuring they have what they need to grow, be happy, and successful. This sometimes involves getting my hands dirty to build or fix something that would otherwise fall through the cracks. I also do a lot of hiring, and have a number of security related responsibilities as part of our SOC 2 policy.\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[{\"type\":\"bold\"}],\"value\":\"You’ve been at Mappedin for almost 6 years now, congratulations! When I first joined Mappedin, the Development team was really small, consisting of maybe around 10 people, and I was our first Developer Evangelist. Prior to that, the role was spread out between the rest of the Dev team. As an individual contributor, I was able to jump in and make a big contribution by building our Web SDK; which is now a core part of our product. Mappedin was having a lot of success and started getting a lot bigger, and eventually the Dev team split up into two teams: the Consumer team and the Enterprise team. Mappedin’s CTO, Ed Wei, asked if I wanted to be a Dev Manager and take over the Consumer team, and I said yes. That went really well, and the team continued to grow and separate into several other teams; all of which I had managed at one point or another. Then at the start of the year, I was promoted to the Director of Engineering, which is where I am today. I enjoy managing people and teams, helping people solve problems, and ultimately helping people be successful. The company is well connected and something that has always impressed me about Mappedin is our company values. It’s the kind of attitude where people help each other out, always try to get better, are willing to go the extra mile when needed to get something done, and feel empowered to make things better for their team, company, and our customers. In every municipality, first responders struggle to maintain pre-incident floor plans for a significant portion of the city, leading to poor situational awareness in emergency response situations. When firefighters get a call, they often don’t know what is going on inside a building, and the floor plans they receive are outdated or in weird formats. Mappedin’s proposed solution will automate the conversion of existing scanned floor plans, which every first responder organization or city permit office has, into simplified, standardized maps. On top of that, we’re creating a situational awareness dashboard for tablets that enables first responders to tag certain areas on the map with icons. This can include the location of the fire, exits and entrances, fire extinguishers, and all other important information. This solution ensures that emergency services always have the most up-to-date information on hand. \",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[{\"type\":\"bold\"}],\"value\":\"Mappedin hosts 3-day hackathons once every quarter, could you tell us more about that? A few of my coworkers were experimenting with a Python library that allowed them to edit Minecraft world files and insert blocks. I created a script that goes through map data layer by layer and uses a line drawing algorithm to connect points and create the polygons that make up the walls and locations on the map. The script then goes back and fills in solid layers like floors using a simple algorithm that works like a bucket fill tool. The bot will then make a request for each ID to get a list of games that the user owns and return a list of games that are common to all users. In the future, we might want to store each users’ owned games in a database so that the bot doesn’t have to make several requests every time it runs. The user is able to select a parking spot on the map and add a marker that persists through page refresh and closing the map. The project started off as designing a Developer Portal but it morphed into getting a new company website. As a part of that, we needed to do new branding and a bunch of research. I did a ton of user testing on the brand ideas, colours, and key phrases that the rest of the team came up with. There were a bunch of different concepts, everything from colours, to fonts, to choosing whether or not we wanted to use illustrated images or real photos.\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[{\"type\":\"bold\"}],\"value\":\"It definitely sounds like a challenging process. With design, you have to trust the idea that you are putting forward because there will always be people who don’t like it or maybe it's not their style, but it was about the goals of the company. I recently started taking some meetings outside as well, for our morning stand-up calls I’ve just been having it on my porch and that has been really nice. AutoCAD helps us clean up the files that we receive from our clients and ensure that there is accurate scaling as well. We also use Adobe Illustrator to clean our data and make sure it's perfect before we move into Mappedin's Map Editor and CMS. Another thing that the mapping team is in charge of is exporting those maps into different compatible formats. One of those formats is IMDF which is a vector data file created by Apple so we also use a custom exporter that we built to export those files and filter certain data.\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[{\"type\":\"bold\"}],\"value\":\"You have a very interesting background. In that sense, I definitely think that a background in design is helpful. Also, because of my background, the ability to interpret CAD files, floor plans, and blueprints comes naturally to me, but this is a skill that can be developed over time. It has definitely been challenging with respect to social interaction and that's one thing I miss about being in the office, but we try to schedule different meetings to overcome that. That state is one of the two more complicated states or screens in the kiosk and that was one of the things that I focused on. There was a while where I tried to learn 3D modelling and I was learning render by myself. It was very hard, a lot harder than I expected. I did one little project by myself, and I've kind of been jumping from thing to thing, trying to fill the time. There was a time when I really got back into drawing. When I was little, I used to do a lot of art and used to go to art classes and got into digital drawing too. I have a tablet and would draw in photoshop little sketches and stuff. At the moment, I am working on a web application for me and my friends to use while we play board games over video chat. I was able to get my hands dirty with setting up the entire project from scratch alongside him and learning a lot from him. We adapt our method based on our growth. For example, in the early days, we rapidly created prototypes and proof of concepts, and launched those very quickly. As the company grew and demand from the market grew, it created a lot of chaos. Then we introduced more process to control that chaos with the ability to continue trialing new concepts. \",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"As for innovation, in the early days, we spent little money towards protecting IP. As we grew, IP protection became more important. We’re always looking for new information to help inform those decisions. And managing demand, it involves a lot of prioritization between teams and growth in hiring. Something creative, something that is difficult to do. It’s not trivial. One of the reasons I love using our stuff is that it’s very innovative and the technology is very interesting and challenging. And it’s difficult to do all of the tooling built for mapping. We have some proprietary technology that we created and have now protected, so I definitely feel like we encourage innovation. We have specific teams that work on prototyping and research projects, so that’s definitely a part of what we do day-to-day and what goes into our innovative approach. \",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[{\"type\":\"bold\"}],\"value\":\"Are there any specific technologies our Development teams use or work on that really set us apart?\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"Not necessarily specific technologies, but it’s more the way we use certain things and how we put them together that sets us apart. Some of them are algorithm-based, some of them are process-based. Above all, our mapping process is much more efficient than anybody else. And more secure. At the end of the day, it’s more about how the people we hire use the resources and their creativity applied to that rather than a specific aspect of the tech stack. \",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[{\"type\":\"bold\"}],\"value\":\"So what could a developer expect coming to work at Mappedin? They differ, but they also have a common thread, which is the system that we're trying to build. Understanding how everything fits together, the overall architecture, and how the maps actually get created and consumed. That's the Mappedin 101 for Dev. That's the basic stuff.\",\"nodeType\":\"text\"}],\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\"},{\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"data\":{},\"marks\":[],\"value\":\"And I think at the end of the day, with the size that we are at, the amount of products that we have, and the different pieces, and the back end that has to be supported; everybody plays a critical role. The developers that thrive are the ones who understand the mission and have a sense of ownership for how they are contributing to that mission. We have an ecosystem. We’re known in the industry. We want to get to a point where we’re as synonymous with indoor maps as Google is for outdoor maps. I believe that having an eye for design contributes to this experience. When I see and think about the city with my design eyes on, it allows me to fully engage in what I am seeing. I find myself not just existing in the spaces here, but investigating them - trying to understand what exactly makes spaces here different. For example, noticing how sidewalks become a whole new type of property here. While it is not required that all mappers have a good sense of direction, I believe this job does improve it! We have to think about space in terms of the most efficient routes to get somewhere, and need to orient ourselves in Google Maps for each new location we map. We must learn how to understand context with limited information. In Lisa’s case, ask her for examples of times she overcame this, what she’s doing to work on it, and what her concerns are with ramping up quickly at the company. This means that throughout the process, the candidate has a chance to speak with someone from People Operations, members of their prospective team, the hiring manager, and Mappedin’s Founder, Hongwei Liu.
